Inc GLENN Sanders Bernard Glenn 45 of Spotsylvania County a computer support specialist photographer and photo lab technician for The Free Lance-Star died of cancer Sunday July 5 1998 at his home Mr Glenn hod retired in 1991 as a captain in the US Marine Corps He was the officer-in-charge for the Visual Information Management Branch Marine Corps Combat Camera Unit at Quantico DAVIS While in the military he served as an infantryman aviation electronic repair technician and combat photographer He began working at The Free Lance-Star in 1991 as a photographer He was an alumnus of the University of North Carolina the University of Southern California School and was working on a computer science degree at Mary Washington College He was a member of the Gar-risonville Church of Christ where he served as a deacon and was a Bible School teacher He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and a former member of the National Negro Officers Association at Quantico He was a former Cub Scout leader and a past PTO president at Battlefield Elementary School Survivors include his wife Una Brewington-Glenn a daughter Akiemi Soleil Glenn and a son Sanders Bernard Glenn Jr both of the -rice diet at Duke Medical Center Jn July 1942 she and her husband were honored by Governor Melville Broughton for being named recipients of the "North Carolina Achievement Award for North Carolina Food and Feed for Family Living" She received a "War Bond Award" in 1939 from the US Department of Agriculture for having canned the most food in North Carolina She also received the "100 Bushel Com Club Award" She received 500 first-place ribbons for her prize canned products baked goods and fresh produce at the Durham County and NC State Fairs She served on the Board of Directors of the White Cross Community Improvement Association She also served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for many years in Durham She received the coveted "North Carolina 4-H Pearl Clover Award" for her 30 years as a volunteer teen leader She served on many committees on the county district and state levels of the 4-H dub assisting hundreds of youth She received many awards for her work on these committees She was a member of the Durham County Grange and the North Carolina Farm Bureau She was one of the founders of the first Durham County Curb Market established for farm families to sell their farm-fresh produce She served as its chairman for 25 years and sold there for many years She and her late husband also helped organize and establish the Chapel Hill-Canrfooro Farmers' Market and sold there for several years She also served on the first Boartl of Directors for this market She was the subject of five feature stories in the Durham Herald-Sun and other newspapers about her work but she would have told you that her greatest "reward in life" was in helping see a student learn to read for the first time helping a Hungarian foreign exchange student learn new agricultural skills and seeing a 4-H'er achieve his or her goals She was a member of Yates Baptist Church since 1937 where she met her late husband She taught the Junior Girls' Sunday School Gass and served as a secretary in the Sunday School Junior Department from 1930 to 1960 A graveside service will be conducted at 3 pm on Saturday at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery in Chatham County by the Reverend John Frederick She is survived by a daughter Betsy Vatavuk a son-in-law William Vatavuk a grandson William Chandler Vatavuk and a sister Ullian Horton all of Durham The family will receive friends at the Howerton-Bryon
