Katherine Glass Bell RALEIGH, NC Edith Bradley Johnson passed peacefully, surrounded by family, on Friday, May 3, at Springmoor Re- tirement Com- munity. Edith Jose- phine was born in 1931 to Mil- dred and Earl Bradley in Scot- land Neck, NC.

Being an only child, Edith and her cousin Jerry (Staton) Bachelor went through life as close as sisters. Edith graduated from Mer- edith College in 1953, after marrying Paul Jones Johnson, Jr. months prior. The cou- ple celebrated the birth of their son, Skip, in 1954, while Paul was stationed at Fort Gordon, GA. A few years later, they welcomed a second son, Brad, born in 1957 in States- ville, NC.

The family settled down in Raleigh in 1958. Six years later, Edith and Paul were overjoyed at the birth of their daughter, Lisa. Edith and Paul joined Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, giving the family a foundation of Christian faith and friendships that would last a lifetime. Edith was a loyal member of the Chancel Choir at Hayes Barton for more than 45 years. She and Paul shared many years of laughter and fel- lowship with the members of their supper club, who became their closest friends.

Edith taught at Hardbarger Junior College of Business for more than 20 years, where she was known as an excellent teacher who cared deeply for her students. Her compassion and work-ethic continued as she served as a caregiver for her mother as she battled and helped Paul run his business after he lost his sight at age 58. By far, greatest passion was her family. Her husband, children, and their spouses (Dale, Kelly, and Da- vid), and her grandchildren Paul, Davis, Hannah, Kiley, and Bethany, were the joys of her life. Edith celebrated each accomplishment, supported ev- ery new endeavor, and longed for each visit.

Her family will always remember her wonder- ful cooking, holiday and birth- day celebrations, and trips to the beach and beyond. Edith was a sweet blessing in the lives of all who knew her. A service of celebration will be held Saturday, May 11, at 1 PM at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church. Visitation to follow. In lieu of me- morials may be made to Hayes Barton UMC, Music Ministry.

Edith Bradley Johnson AUGUST 9, 3, 2019 CHAPEL HILL Dorothy Caye Hol- land, 74, died on April 14, 2019, from ovarian cancer. For more than decades she served others as a scholar and mentor, a social justice activist, and a humani- tarian. Dottie was born in New- port, TN on May 18, 1944. She began her career as a mathematician, graduating from East Carolina University magna cum laude in 1966. She studied moderniza- tion in Trinidad for her mas- in anthropology at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill.

She earned her doctorate at the University of California at Irvine in 1974 and began her career in the UNC- CH Anthropology Department until she retired in 2016. As a scholar Dottie dem- onstrated a robust thirst for understanding our social and cultural worlds. She was a gifted listener with a delightful sense of humor, always moving discussions to deeper levels of inquiry and intimacy. As a social justice activist she was a champion of envi- ronmental health and racial and gender equity. Dottie challenged her colleagues, students, and friends to seek and apply strategies for social change.

She encouraged those affected by injustices such as environmental racism and the school-to-prison pipeline to join researchers in searching for solutions. As a humanitarian, Dottie listened and observed with a desire to uplift others. She gave to the needs and inter- ests of those less fortunate. Dottie also cared deeply about her students. She was the con- summate mentor who became a life-long friend of many stu- dents.

She advocated for them and wrote thoughtful recom- mendation letters, sometimes years after their graduation. Dottie loved to collaborate with her students and other faculty on important research projects in other countries as well as in North Carolina. She authored nine books and more than 70 journal articles. She had a remarkable ability to theorize about the concrete ob- servations of anthropological reputation as a thinker and leader propelled her to chair her department, to be named the Cary C. Bosham- er Professor of Anthropology, and to become President of the Society for Psychological An- thropology.

Her writing about cultural models, worlds and the role of identity and agency in social movements has inspired many others who use her theo- ries and perspectives in their work. In 2017, more than 30 graduate students and faculty organized and spoke at Living Legacy of Dorothy ses- sion during the American A ogy Associa- tion meetings in Washington, DC. One of Dot- best known books is Edu- cated for Romance: Women, Achievement and College Culture which she wrote with Margaret Eisenhart. The book reported from a National Science Foundation- funded study of women who majored in math and science in college but who were di- verted from their careers by romance and marriage. This careful research helped explain why some women struggle to succeed in In one of her last research collaborations, Dottie and colleagues Charles Price and Pat Johnson recognized the pressing challenges Black men experience in the United States.

Rather than focus on pathology, they conducted in- depth interviews to learn what knowledge, people, and re- sources Black men in different regions and generations sum- mon when facing and how they understand and experience race. The project is now developing educational products to be shared with par- ents, communities, and organi- zations. Dottie created a large ex- tended family of former stu- dents, colleagues, and friends that included her beloved partner Charles Odoms and Pat Johnson, a friend and col- league for half a century (both of Hartford, CN); Jeff Boyer, his children Chelcy and Josh, and their children; Kim Allen, a former student and friend, and son Allen Buansi, who Dottie described as a from another One of many lead- ership roles was as founding director of the Graduate Cer- in Participatory Re- search (GCPR) at UNC-CH, an interdisciplinary learning community for research in partnership with communities. In tribute to her grandfather, Ashby Gaines Holland, a col- umnist for the Newport (TN) Plain Talk newspaper, who saw something special in the little girl growing up in Appa- lachia, Dottie left a legacy gift to GCPR to fund the Holland Seed Grant Awards. Donations in memory of Dot- tie to the Graduate in Participatory Research may be made here: toryresearch.web.unc.edu/ Dorothy C.
